Faces of New Hampshire: Portraits from the New Hampshire Historical Society's Collection

Portrait of Lyman Thomas Flint, 1839
Lyman Thomas Flint (1817-76), oil on canvas, attributed to John Gadsby Chapman (1808-89), 1839. Gift of Dorothea Flint.

Over the past 150 years the Society has assembled and preserved a collection of 500 portraits in all mediums. Faces of New Hampshire, a new exhibition showcasing 30 of the most compelling and significant portraits from this remarkable collection, is on view at the Society’s library.

Every portrait has within it a story about the life of the sitter, the artist, and the time in which it was created. Portraits were made for a variety of reasons—as keepsakes of a loved one, mementos of an important life event, and symbols of status. They also were produced in many forms and materials, from oil paintings to marble sculpture. We naturally think of portraits of people, but they have also been made of memorable animals, buildings, and communities. Portraits often proudly display the status of the sitter, whether a rising young lawyer or a sea captain who has traveled around the world. Each portrait featured in Faces of New Hampshire helps reveal the life and stories of the sitter and the talent and perspective of the artist. .
